Clunes is a railway station in the township of Clunes, Victoria, Australia. The station was opened in 1874, and was closed in 1993 when passenger services discontinued on the Mildura Line. Since that time the station has been left empty, with the station building and platform still in place. It will re open, along with the restoration of passenger services to Maryborough in November 2011.[1]
The station, along with parts of the main street, were famously used in the film Mad Max when the bikie crew pick up the Nightrider's coffin. Reg Evans who played the Station Master in this scene was killed in the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009.
The return of passenger services to Maryborough was announced in December 2008 as part of a $50 million project,[2] but as recently as October 2009 the State Government had stated there would be no station at Clunes, the only intermediate stop being at Creswick.[3][4]
In June 2010 it was announced that Clunes would be included as a stop on the re-opened railway line, when V/Line services are extended from Ballarat to Maryborough. The works to reopen the station will cost of $7 million.[1] In March 2010 a new siding 140 metres in length was provided opposite the platform, to be used to stable track machines.[5][6]
